The Trickster's Song

Michael Chabon introduced the idea of "trickster lit," in which "the highbrow and the lowbrow, once kept chastely separate, are now hooking up, [and] you can almost see the future of literature coming." Lev Grossman classed Chabon with a movement of authors similarly eager to blend literary and popular writing.

The world is filled with voices, but some are infrequently heard because they don't conform to expectations, genre conventions, old-school definitions of what constitutes "literary." In this issue, we hope to publish a wide range of voices, genre-bending, hybrid work that challenges expectations and focuses on originality and fresh perspectives. The common thread should be innovation, genuine emotions, plumbing the full range of human experience. We want to hear from the tricksters, the writers who combine the best of all forms of writing to produce wonderful work. Whatever your sex, race, orientation, religion, country of origin—send us your work. We want to read it. Help us see what has not been seen before.

We are an environmentally conscious journal and only accept submissions through Submittable.
